A Voyage Through Contemporary Beijing

Beijing is sensory overload...



It is people, more people and even more people.  Over 21 million people live in Beijing.  Think about that.  It's 2 1/2 times larger than New York City.  And with all those people comes the sounds, the smells, the smog and the caucophony of it all coming together.






Our First Night In China

Following a 13 hour flight from Vancouver, Canada we arrived in Beijing around 8pm.  Jet lagged and exhausted, I received a call from a dear friend of mine, Huang Dalei (or Dale as we called him).  Dale and I had worked together for many years when he was in the states and have been close friends ever since.   Well, tonight, he wanted to take us to dinner.

And it was very cool.  We got to see some parts of the city that were not on the normal tourists maps.

Life in Beijing

We spent some time just traveling around the streets of Beijing.  It's fascinating to see the cultural and lifestyle differences.  As with any other destination we've travelled, we found that the Chinese people were extraordinarily welcoming.

Sonja and I have been blessed with the privilege of visiting  some of the most fascinating and impressive places in the world.  None more so than the Great Wall of China. Think about what you knew of this man-made marvel.  As kids, we knew it was in China and that it was built a long time ago.  Once we got there, what blew us away was... it's about 2700 years old.  They didn't have any construction equipment back then.  This was all built by hand and manual labor.  It's 20-23 feet high and the total length is over 13,000 miles long!  13,000!  That's half the length of the equator and is the longest feat of human engineering in history.   To get to the wall, it's about an hour or two outside of Beijing.  The drive is fairly bland until you begin to get peeks of the wall. Shanghai

  "There is something in Shanghai that is very exciting and alive - the idea of a city with two different souls, one from today and another from a long time ago, is amazing."    -- Alessandro Michele Shanghai Shanghai is massive!  26 million people!  Imagine a city 3 times as large as New York City and twice as dense.   Just the ride in from the airport to our hotel displayed the transformation this city was taking. We spent three days in Shanghai and one of the best memories is getting up real early and taking a walk out onto the streets.  The world was just coming alive and the bustle was only beginning. Sonja has never met a street vendor she didn't love. She didn't speak English, Sonja didn't speak Chinese.  No telling what was going to be in that food.
